History

The Kingston Standard Church dates back to 1918, and Reverend J.G. Nussey. Reverend Nussey pitched a tent in what is now known as McBurney park to hold revival services. Soon after, these services gave birth to the Kingston Standard society, and on October 14, 1918, to the Kingston Standard Church. The newly formed congregation purchased its first property, a house at 66 Main St., in 1919. After renovation, the house was sold. The congregation erected a traditional church building on Barrie Street in 1926, and held a dedication service on February 13, 1927. By the late 1960’s, Sunday school and parking space had become limited, so the church was relocated to the corner of Sydenham and Sunnyside Rd. - our present location. Dedication of the new building occurred on June 22, 1975. Since opening the new building, our congregation has more than doubled in size.
Shortly after our Thirtieth Anniversary in our present location the congregation endorsed the work of a steering committee and the recommendation of the board to begin an accessibility project. The willingness of the congregation to pull together resulted in an expanded, renovated, and accessible facility with a newly paved parking lot. We celebrated the completion of the project in October of 2006. Today if you visit our church there is an elevator type lift to take you to the main floor. As well for those who have difficulty hear we have hearing assist devices.
In 2003 the Kingston Standard Church, along with the Standard Church of America, voted to merge with the Central Canada district of the Wesleyan Church. Our name remains unchanged, but we are now listed as belonging to the Wesleyan denomination. The Weslayan denomination, like the Standard Church, is both Methodist and Evangelical. We are Methodist in that we trace our roots to John Wesley, an Anglican Priest whose ministry to the marginalized of England in the mid 1700’s resulted in a worldwide movement called Methodism. We are evangelical in that we see the story of Jesus’ birth, life, death, and resurrection as good news. Our desire is to listen to Jesus and tell his story to others.
